Preparing your fleet for the ELD mandate, what does that involve?

Mont Saint-Hilaire, QC, April 9th, 2021 – Today, our Training Director Mélanie Cadieux is guiding you through the preparatory steps for the Canadian ELD (Electronic Logging Device) regulations.

My first question for you is, are you ready?

Have you started preparing for your deployment? Have you started purchasing your devices, or the equipment that the driver will use to do his electronic log? Are the tablets secured? Have you planned to purchase everything you will need for June 2022?

… It sounds far away, but it’s coming relatively quickly!

With that in mind, here are the 8 key steps to implementing the electronic log.

1) Install the ELDs – Permanently fixed with the right harnesses. Install the driver terminals in a fixed rack.

2) Prepare your database for the electronic log – There are many violations caused by the lack of configuration at the administrator level. There is some information that is essential to configure in the database before deploying the electronic logbook. We are talking about the configuration of vehicles and trailers, for example: plate numbers, province of registration, etc. Then the configuration of the users, for example: drivers’ license numbers, home terminal information, carriers’ numbers, etc.

3) Consider getting training – Everyone in the company will be affected by the ELD mandate, but in the end, you will all be able to save time with the electronic platform, including better compliance management (e.g., less driver fatigue). However, this requires preparation for implementation. At AttriX, we offer training for your compliance, more specifically, the management of activity reports, availabilities, violations, unassigned movements and compliance report management.

4) Understand the law – Does everyone understand the HOS and rest regulations for transportation? It’s complicated, does the whole team understand the little details? The exemptions? As the owner/operator, it is your responsibility to provide the required skills to your entire team.

5) Driver Training – Prepare your drivers for this transition. Drivers require technical knowledge in order to comply with the ELD regulations. A well-trained driver will be confident on the road with their new driver terminal.

6) Print all documentation that is mandatory when doing electronic logging.

7) Implement automated compliance reports – The goal is to optimize your fleet’s performance.

8) Post-training follow-up – This step is the key to the success of your fleet deployment. It is important to validate where your team members stand in terms of the skills required for the electronic transition.
